Membership Overview

The Sigma Gamma Tau (SGT) Chapter of the University of Florida (UF) Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) is pleased to invite new members on a regular basis. SGT invites members using the membership qualifications shown below. Official qualifications are kept on record with the SGT advisor and present student officers. SGT membership is extended via invitation on behalf of the current members, officers, and SGT advisor. Potential member lists are identified via the UF MAE student advising office. SGT does not collect, assess, or have access to demographic data (such as race, religion, ethnicity, gender, or any other kind of metric) for current or potential members. Current members are expected to vote for acceptance of new members according to the rules set-forth in the UF SGT constitution.

Once admitted and initiated in the UF SGT section, each member is expected to participate in activities agreed upon by the SGT officers, SGT advisor, and membership body. These include three main components and are described on this page.

Voting on Undergraduate Candidates for Membership

  • The President of the chapter will conduct the elections.
  • All votes will remain secret.
  • A quorum consisting of three-fourths of the active undergraduate members must be present. Voting on candidates for undergraduate membership will be done only by active undergraduate members.
  • A three-fourths vote of the members present is required for the election of senior students and a four-fifths vote is required for election of junior and sophomore students.
  • The voting may be conducted in up to three ballots with one ballot being cast for each candidate before a second ballot on any candidate may be taken. A second ballot will be taken only on those individuals who fail to receive the requisite number of votes.
